Car Insurance Excess in Bahrain: When You Pay and How Much

Understand compulsory, additional and voluntary car insurance excess in Bahrain, including the published private-vehicle excess bands and when each applies.

The car insurance excess is the part of an eligible own-damage claim that you may have to pay yourself. The insurer covers the repair or settlement amount above it, subject to the policy.

In Bahrain, the unified own-damage framework sets compulsory excess bands for private vehicles and identifies situations where an additional excess applies. Your quotation can also add a voluntary excess or endorsements — so the number at checkout matters as much as the premium.

The published compulsory excess

Insured value of the private vehicleCompulsory excess
BD 20,000 or lessBD 50
More than BD 20,000 and up to BD 50,000BD 100
More than BD 50,000Agreed between the insurer and the insured
Under CBB Resolution No. (4) of 2020, where the insured is responsible for the accident. Your issued policy remains the reference, and additional excesses may also apply.

The three types of excess you may see

Compulsory excess

The standard amount that applies under the policy for a covered own-damage claim in the stated circumstances. It is not normally optional.

Additional excess

An extra amount can apply because of a particular driver or event. Under the published framework, an additional excess of BD 50 to BD 200, depending on the vehicle's value, can apply where the responsible accident happened while the car was being driven by:

  • a person aged 21 or younger; or
  • a person who had held a driving licence recognised by the General Directorate of Traffic for less than one year.

The framework also sets a BD 100 excess for an accident recorded against an unknown person. Windscreen damage is covered up to BD 300 after the applicable compulsory excess.

Voluntary excess

Some products let you accept a higher excess in return for a lower premium. That can suit a driver who could comfortably fund a larger amount after a claim, but it is a poor trade if the annual saving is small or the excess would delay repairs.

How multiple excesses stack

An additional or voluntary excess may apply on top of the compulsory amount if the policy says so. Do not assume the highest number replaces the others.

Before buying, ask for one clear answer: if this car has an at-fault accident with this driver, what is the total excess payable under this quotation?

When an excess applies

  • You caused a covered accident under comprehensive cover. The compulsory excess normally applies to the eligible repair, and additional or voluntary excesses may apply too.
  • A driver aged 21 or younger caused the accident. The young-driver additional excess can apply on top of the compulsory amount, depending on the policy and the vehicle's value.
  • The accident was recorded against an unknown party. The published framework sets a BD 100 excess. Use the official report — never misstate how an accident happened to avoid an amount.
  • The other driver was responsible. An excess is not automatically payable. The official record, claim route, recovery process and policy decide.
  • You only have third-party cover. There is no own-damage repair to deduct an excess from — the issue is that your car sits outside the basic cover entirely.

Excess is not the same as depreciation

The excess is an amount you contribute to a covered claim. Depreciation is a reduction that may apply to the value of parts, the car or a settlement under the policy rules. You can therefore face an excess, plus a separate parts-depreciation contribution, plus a non-covered item or upgrade.

Ask for the repair or settlement breakdown if the amount requested is higher than the excess shown on your schedule.

Should you choose a higher voluntary excess?

Compare the premium saving with the extra amount at risk. Accepting an additional BD 100 voluntary excess to save a small amount each year may take several claim-free years to break even. Choose one only if you could pay it immediately after an accident, the premium reduction is meaningful, you know whether it stacks with other excesses, and any finance agreement permits it.

What to check on every quotation

  • Compulsory excess and any voluntary excess
  • Young-driver or new-licence excess
  • Unknown-party excess
  • Off-road or special-use excess
  • Windscreen excess, if separate
  • Whether the excesses are cumulative
  • When the excess is paid, and to whom

Do not rely on someone saying "the excess is usually BD 50." The total depends on the car's value, the driver and the policy you are issued.

Frequently asked questions

Is the car insurance excess always BD 50 in Bahrain?
No. Under the published private-vehicle framework, BD 50 applies where the car is insured for BD 20,000 or less in the stated at-fault circumstances. Higher-value cars, additional driver excesses, unknown-party claims and voluntary choices can all change the total.
Do I pay the excess if I was not at fault?
Not automatically in every case. The official fault record, the claim route and your policy determine the treatment, so confirm with the insurer handling the claim before paying anything.
Does the excess apply to third-party insurance?
The own-damage excess described here relates to comprehensive claims for your own vehicle. Basic third-party insurance does not pay to repair your own car at all.
Can the excess be more than the repair cost?
Yes. If the eligible repair cost is below the applicable total excess, there may be nothing for the insurer to pay on the own-damage section. Ask the insurer before opening a small claim.
Where do I find my excess?
Check the quotation, policy schedule, certificate, endorsements and wording. If several excesses are shown, ask for the total that would apply to your specific driver scenario.
